For example:

(Example 1)
15/2 F.1-F3 Going to Picnic F.4-F.7 having lessons/exam in school
21/2 F.4-F.7 Going to Picnic F.1-F.3 having lessons in school

(Example 2)
15/2 F.1-F3 Going to Picnic F.4-F.7 having holiday
21/2 F.4-F.7 Going to Picnic F.1-F.3 having holiday

For example 1, it is impractical because teachers often teach higher and lower forms. That is to day, Form teachers of F.1-F.3 may have to teach higher forms as well. Form teachers of F.4-F.7 may certainly have to teach lower forms. So example 1 is not a feasible.

For example 2, why not having picnic on one day? Having two picnic days will also reduce the number of teaching days (please note that we have to follow the requirement of Education Bureau).

I wonder if students would like to go over the decision making process that the teachers have gone through on Wednesday afternoon:

Step 1. Identifying the problem
Concerns from some teachers about the bad weather on Picnic Day, leading to the issue on "Should the school cancel the picnic?"

Step 2. Studying the situations and information available.

(a) Information from the Hong Kong Observatory:
(i)the cold and rainy weather will persist for several more days
(ii)COLD WEATHER WARNING will probably be continued (N.B.: One of the actions to be taken for COLD WEATHER WARNING is to “If you must go out, avoid prolonged exposure to wintry winds (如必須外出,應避免長時間置身在寒風中。)”

(b) Information from teachers:
(i)Some students do not want to go to picnic in such weather
(ii)Some students will be disappointed if they can't go to picnic, especially the S.5 and S.7 students

So, according to the information available, what would be the expected weather on Friday? Should the school follow the guidelines given by the HK Observatory for COLD WEATHER WARNING? How should we please both groups of students?

Step 3. Considering constraints, policy that must be followed, time factor:
(a) According to EDB, we must inform parents in advance for early release of students
(b) Some students have planned to start buying things for the picnic after school on Wednesday.
(c) If we don't cancel the booking of coaches, we have to pay for them if we cancel the picnic on Friday.

How can we ensure that parents are informed in advance? How can we avoid students wasting their efforts? Shoudl we cancel the coaches earlier?

Step 4.Suggesting solutions and analysing the pros and cons (Please refer to Mr. Tang KM's first message)

It is a very difficult decision for us too. We understand that some students will blame the school for cancelling the picnic, but we also know that some students will blame the school if they have to be exposed to such cold weather for a long time.

Do you think the school like to change something that we have planned for such a long time? There is no reason for us to change it if we do not believe that the change is better for the students.
This year, the persistent coldness is very unusual and totally unforeseeable.

I hope to quote what one S.1 student said: "It is a bit disappointing to cancel the picnic, but we can see it as a special and memorable incident in our first year of secondary school life."

Principal has shown a good example of Problem-based Learning which is a common approach to the study of Liberal Studies.

The problem: Picnic under cold and rainy weather, should we continue?

Then we need to look at the problem from different angles (not necessarily from different people):

(a) safety issue/health of the students
(b) advice from Hong Kong Observatory and Education Bureau
(c) students'/parents'/teachers' opinions and expectations
(d) matters related to insurance
(e) money issue (refund?)
(f) coach issue (credibility?)
(g) ............

The next step is to propose ways to solve the problem. (even if we choose to continue, we still need to think about the measures which will guarantee the safety and health issue of the students. One can list many options. But then we still need to analyze the options with reference to (a), (b), (c) and so on.

Finally, we have a decision to the problem. Through the above process, we surely can have a clear picture of why Mr. Luk has headache in these days..hahahhaa.

ps.
而家D F.1 都讀到 F.6
It is a bit disappointing to cancel the picnic, but we can see it as a special and memorable incident in our last year of secondary school life."

No one can force a person how to think. When an incident happens, there may be various consequences, some may be good while others may be bad.

The story of "half bottle of water" is the simplest one to illustrate that one can choose to think whether the bottle is half full or half empty.

When a boss asks a subordinate to take up a project, it is the subordinate's choice to think whether the boss is giving him the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities, or is punishing him by giving him more work.

When the school replaced the picnic with a class party, individual student can choose whether to grieve on it and be unhappy, or to accept it as a special incident and enjoy the party and the extra half day off.

In the above examples, ONLY the person invovled can decide whether to think posotively or negatively. Of course, thinking differently will lead to different behaviours, which will lead to different outcomes.

Positive thinking in general is viewing the positive side of things rather than the negative side , positive thinkers see a chance in every challenge and negative thinkers see a challenge in every chance .

You may learn more about "positive and negative thinking" from the excerpts from "thinkquest.org" listed below:

What can positive thinking do to your life
Positive thinking can turn your life the other way around because many of our pain and suffering in life that we experience is because of expecting bad things to happen, excess worry and anxiety. Underlying many of the personal disorders people have is incorrect perception of reality or viewing reality from a much worse perspective than its really is . Thinking in a positive way will make your life much happier and healthier because you will be either living a positive moment or expecting a positive moment.

How to be a positive thinker?
The key for positive thinking is changing your "self talk" to a positive self talk instead of a negative one, self talk are the phrases and words you use when you think or talk to yourself, e.g., a negative thinker could use phrases in his mind like "Oh! I will never make it in time" or maybe "I don't expect to do well today, just like every time". This negative self talk can easily be changed into positive self talk using training. Whenever you find yourself thinking negatively, say to yourself "I must be more rational, things may not be that negative". After some time of practice positive thinking will become a habit. Another good thing you can do in order to become a positive thinker is to understand how does thoughts flow inside your mind, by understanding what triggers certain thoughts you will be able to control your thoughts to a certain extent and so help yourself in becoming a positive thinker.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Negative Thinking

The opposite of positive, negative thinking seems easier to do with someone to blame, but it usually makes you anxious and unhappy inside. Negative thinking will get in your way, constantly hindering you in your everyday life. You won't be able to do as much because you're busy feeling bad.

Over-generalization, when negative thinking covers everything
One very complicated form of negative thinking is over-generalization, that is, thinking that everything is negative while expecting nothing to be positive at all. Over-generalization may be your normal way of thinking that you have developed from your past experience, or it may be a temporary mental state that you experience when having a bad day. Usually when lots of bad things happen at the beginning of a day people expect the whole day to be bad, this is one form of over-generalization.

Friends and negative thinking
Friends can be a source of either positive or negative ideas, make sure you pick positive thinking friends , optimists are natural positive thinkers , stay longer with them and tell them more about your future plans.

It doesn't mean that we have to accept everything, but we can do much more and be more happy if we can think positively and put our efforts to make constructive suggestions instead of just blaming and grieving.

I hope to share with you the following prayer:
“God, give me serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.”
